An YSTRADGYNLAIS man who has kept a cycle path between two communities in top condition has been presented with a bicycle for his efforts.

Myrddyn Griffiths of Penrhos, was presented with the bike for the work he does on the cycle path between Coelbren and Ystradgynlais as a volunteer cycle ranger for the national charity Sustrans, who run a support programme for volunteers across Wales.

Over the last four years, he has carried out many tasks including litter-picking, putting up signs and clearing vegetation.

Myrddyn has been carrying out his duties on foot previously but will be able to cycle the path now to make sure it is top condition after Howard Williams, of the 1st Swansea Valley Scouts, had a bike refurbished for him to use.

A section of the path passes the 1st Swansea Valley Scouts’ centre, which has been of great benefit to the young people attending the scouts here.

Cllr John Powell, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “Our cycle paths can be enjoyed by all, especially when they are kept in good condition. I’m delighted that the council can rely on volunteers like Myrddyn, who has kept his path in excellent condition and I’m sure the local community appreciates the work that he does.”

Helen Davies, of Sustrans Cymru, said: “Myrddyn is a great asset to the cycle network in this area. He liaises with Powys County Council and reports problems and issues to them that then get resolved. He is out in all weather and this section of route is in a very good condition thanks to all of his hard work.”

“I’m was pleased to present the bike to Mryddyn for all his effort and hard work,” said Cllr Susan McNicholas, local member for Ynyscedwyn, who was joined by Howard Williams in presenting the bike.

“He is a great help to all of those using the route and his contribution has been invaluable. The cycle route is extremely popular all kinds of people cycling and walking along it for exercise and relaxation. I hope Myrddyn can keep up his good work, which will now be easier on his new bike.”
