PREHISTORIC flint, a Roman road and Bronze Age ditches are amongst the finds of an archaeological excavation at the new Ysgol Bro Dinefwr site at Llandeilo.

The dig is currently underway at the site of the £30million new school at Lovelodge Fields, Ffairfach, which will cater for 1,200 pupils when it opens its doors in 2015.

The category 2B bilingual school at Ffairfach is being built through Carmarthenshire County Council’s Modernising Education Programme and according to the local authority will provide first class accommodation and facilities, plus high quality vocational courses with other Dinefwr schools and Coleg Sir Gar.

Contractors Leadbitter are due to start work soon for the build, which is expected to take two years.

First, the excavation needs to take place, and for the past five weeks a team of professional archaeologists from AB Heritage Limited and Rubicon Heritage Services Limited have been working on site.

So far the team has excavated parts of a Roman road that ran across the site, two Bronze Age ring ditches, and a range of Neolithic post-holes and various other ditches and pits.

A Prehistoric flint scatter has also been recorded in one area of the site, suggesting the possibility of Prehistoric activity there.

Members of the public are now being invited to join the team for a day to help search for more evidence in this area of prehistoric activity.

Project Manager for AB Heritage, Phil Bethell, said: “We are looking for local volunteers to join us on Saturday, March 15, to help us with a fieldwalking exercise on an area of the new school site.

“We are looking for fragments of flint, which were used to make tools and weapons for many thousands of years in prehistoric times.

“We will be spending a day out in the field carefully searching the surface and mapping any finds.

“Participants will need a sharp eye and good wellies! We will also have a flint expert on hand to help with identification of any finds.”

There may also be opportunities for further involvement with the project, helping with the excavation of test-pits between March 24 and 28 following the fieldwalking exercise.

The council’s education executive board member Cllr Keith Davies said: “These are very exciting finds which will record the important of this site."
