A LLANDYBIE solicitor who ‘could barely run one mile 18 months ago’ is set to take on a marathon, and in the process rais e money for a children’s charity.

Susan Howell, aged 41, will be running the gruelling Paris marathon on April 6 to raise money for the Children’s Hospital for Wales, Noah’s Ark Appeal, a charity that helps support sick and vulnerable children.

The busy mother of four has managed to take time out from her hectic schedule to tackle her tough training programme.

In the last year and a half, Susan has not just been pounding the pavements within her local community but has taken on two half marathons, all in preparation for the French marathon.

“I’m completely serious when it comes to the training.

“To start with I wasn’t a very good runner - barely able to run a mile – but I’m now completely committed to the training, and the half marathons have helped prepare me for my toughest challenge to date.”

To help boost the total target, Susan came up with the idea to approach Barclays Bank, and ask them if they would like to match fund her total, through their pound for pound scheme, to which the bank happily obliged.

As well as training, being a mum, and her full time job, the fundraising mother has also managed to organise a charity night, with the help of her good friend Nicola McGrane, at Llandybie rugby club.

The night, on Friday, March 21, will feature singing duo, Sibling Rivalry, plus a quiz and raffle.

“I thought a charity night would be a great way to raise more money for the appeal, and I welcome any donations from local businesses as raffle prizes, said Susan.

“I am so grateful to everyone who has helped out, especially Nicola.”

But Nicola has said she is more than happy to help out at the fundraiser.

“Susan is such a dedicated woman,” said Nicola, from Llandybie.

“She has been amazing, and I am happy to support her and help out in any way I can.”

Entry to the charity night is £3, a buffet will also be available on the evening at an extra cost of £3.

Kind-hearted Susan has also taken the decision to fund the trip to Paris herself, saying she wouldn’t feel right taking money for her to take part, she wants all the money to go to the appeal.
