A Towy Valley postwoman will be putting her best foot forward in April as she looks to walk the Great Wall of China.

Cheryl Pugh-Jones will spend two weeks tramping the largest man-made structure on the planet in aid of cancer research.

The 50-year-old, a member of Carmarthenshire Ramblers, is no stranger to pounding the pavements in her role delivering the post up and down the Towy Valley, but walking the 2,700-year-old structure is likely to prove a major step up from posting letters through the doors of homes on the streets of Llandeilo.

Cheryl, the only Welsh member of the 12-man group taking up the challenge, is already getting itchy feet as her departure draws near.

“I am getting more and more excited the closer it gets,” she told the Guardian.

“We will be walking for eight hours every day but I’m sure my job delivering the post will help.”

Cherly, who is originally from Garnant but now lives in Llanarthne, will be completing the walk in aid of the Lung Cancer Campaign Carmarthenshire in memory of her late father, who succumbed to the disease.

Such is her determination to support the charity that Cheryl has already paid for the entire trip out of her own pocket.

“I booked and paid for the trip two years ago,” she said.

“The great thing is that because I’ve paid for it already, every single penny raised will be donated to the charity.

“None of my sponsorship money will be put to the cost of the trip, it will all go to help curing this awful disease.”

Royal Mail has also agreed to match all the money Cheryl raises so the campaign is sure to receive a welcome boost thanks to her supports and well-wishers.

She has set up a justgiving web page were people can donate online and there are also collection points on her postal round.

Cheryl will be flying out to Beijing on April 17 to begin her great adventure.

“I can’t wait to get started,” she said with a grin.
