A DRUNKEN 22-year-old Garnant man threatened to punch a police officer in the face so he could spend the night in the cells with his girlfriend, Llanelli magistrates heard today.

Steven John Jenkins, of 123 Cwmaman Road, told officers he would have no choice but to assault them so he too could be taken into custody after his partner was arrested following a late-night incident in Ammanford town centre.

Ellie Morgan, prosecuting, told Llanelli magistrates how officers on patrol at 2am on December 27 came across Jenkins and his partner standing in the middle of Wind Street.

When the pair were told to move to the pavement, both Jenkins and the woman became aggressive.

When told he faced arrest unless his returned to the pavement, Jenkins refused and told the officers: "You are going to have arrest me then, aren't you?"

When the pair, who were both heavily intoxicated, were eventually ushered off the road, Jenkins' girlfriend became aggressive.

Jenkins complained that a number of taxi drivers had refused to take them home.

When the pair were warned they faced arrest unless they left the area, Jenkins' girlfriend began shouting and swearing at the officers.

When she was eventually arrested, handcuffed and placed in the rear of a police vehicle, Jenkins approached an officer saying: "You can't lock her up without me.

"If you are going to arrest her you will have to arrest me too."

When the officers warned him about his behaviour, Jenkins adopted a fighting stance and said: "I guess I'm going to have to punch you in the face, then."

Jenkins was then arrested and taken to Llanelli police station, with his girlfriend.

Magistrates were told Jenkins had three previous public order offences on record.

Craig Davies, defending, said Jenkins had become concerned following his girlfriend's first arrest.

"He wanted to go with her," said Mr Davies.

"He felt that was the only way he could be with her."

Jenkins admitted using threatening behaviour.

He was fined £55 and ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £15 legal surcharge.
