A 20-year-old Amman Valley man has admitted his decision to drink and drive has cost him his job.

David John Edwards, of 4 King Edward Road, pleaded guilty to charges of driving while over the limit and driving without valid insurance when he appeared before magistrates in Llanelli.

Williams, who represented himself in court, told magistrates: “It was a really silly thing to do. I have lost my job because of it.”

Prosecutor Gerald Neave told the court how a police patrol car travelling along Brynaman Road spotted Williams driving a Vauxhall Vectra in the opposite direction towards Gwaun cae Gurwen at 1.50am.

The officers decided to follow Williams and went to speak to him after he stopped the car near his home.

“They immediately noted that he smelt of alcohol,” Mr Neave told the court.

Williams told the officers he had drunk two pints earlier in the evening.

When the officers asked whether he held a valid insurance policy, Williams replied “no”.

Tests showed he had 51 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Williams was banned from driving for 12 months and fined £110 for drink-driving.

He was fined an additional £110 for driving without insurance and his licence was endorsed.

He was also ordered to pay £85 court costs and a further £15 legal surcharge.
