DRIVER feedback signs are being considered in favour of road humps in Walters Road, Ammanford, in order to regulate traffic speeds and improve general road safety.

It is part of a wider Welsh Government grant-funded road safety scheme for the area in question.

The signs will help reinforce a 20mph speed limit in the area.

Carmarthenshire Council highways have consulted with its partners and statutory consultees before inviting objections by publishing proposals by ways of a public notice in local press and placing site notices.

Officers say there were no objections from the fire, ambulance services, police or hauliers or bus operators.

However, following the receipt of two objections from residents to the road humps the council’s executive board member for transport services, Cllr Colin Evans, decided the authority would introduce driver feedback signs instead.

The residents suggested the road humps were unnecessary because existing speeds were already low and almost at “crawling pace.” They said the 20mph limit would be sufficient to reduce speeds and preferred to see alternative measurers to humps introduced.

A council survey showed there were low traffic speeds only at school times. Otherwise average speeds were being 27 and 30mph. In other areas speed humps had reduced average speeds by up to 10mph once introduced. Driver feedback signs were cheaper to install and had the same kind of effect.
