A LLANDOVERY town councillor believes someone will be killed at a notorious junction in the town unless police get tough with irresponsible drivers.

Cllr Haydn Hudson said motorists parking across the Myddfai junction with High Street made it virtually impossible for fellow road-users to turn left towards the town – and suggested local police were not doing enough to address the problem.

"There was absolute chaos down there last Tuesday because no lorries could come out of that junction," he told colleagues. "No-one seems to get booked down there, yet there'll certainly be some hue and cry if someone gets killed. These are local drivers causing this problem – I just can't understand it."

Pc Howie Davies insisted that drivers who partially blocked the junction had received fixed penalty notices and also ran the risk of having their vehicles towed away. "No-one is immune to the Road Traffic Act," he warned.

But Pc Davies conceded that the problem did not seem to be going away and suggested that a gap in double yellow lines persuaded some motorists to think it was okay to park there.

But he added that the parking of cars on High Street acted as a traffic-calming measure. "The last thing I want are vehicles speeding through Llandovery," he said. "We need a balanced approach to this."

Cllr Gill Wright commented: "It's illegal to park close to a junction – the fact there are no lines there is irrelevant."

Responding to an issue councillors described as "an old chestnut", town clerk Henry Caldecote reminded members they had raised the matter with the South Wales Trunk Road Agency who had "passed the buck" onto the Welsh Government.
