RESIDENTS of streets near Ysgol Dyffryn Aman in Ammanford say they are sick and tired of inconsiderate motorists parking across their drives and preventing them from getting into their homes.

They have also voiced frustration at "a lack of action" by Carmarthenshire county council and maintain it is only a matter of time before an accident happens in Brynmawr Avenue or Church Street.

Speaking on behalf of residents, Rob Davies and Jamie Duncan claim that teachers and pupils at nearby Ysgol Dyffryn Aman were the biggest culprits.

"They park in all available or non-available areas with no consideration for local residents – it’s only a matter of time before an accident occurs in front of the school or on the junction of Church Street and Brynmawr Avenue and the nasty corner of All Saints Church," they told the Guardian.

"We are constantly receiving damage to our vehicles and verbal abuse by people trying to park in small spaces in an attempt to save themselves from paying a £1 fee in the local car park where ample room is available."

They say that nothing has been done since a meeting involving Traffic Manager John McEvoy and county councillor Deian Harries was held last summer.

"To be honest the situation is getting worse by the day," said Mr Davies.

In an email to Mr McEvoy the residents stated: "We thought It would be nice and neighbourly to send you an update of the daily carnage we are experiencing – and not a traffic warden to be seen all day long!

"If so required we can upload daily pictures until the yellow lines arrive or parking bays arrive (if they ever do) even though you assured us they would actually be done by now, so that we the residents can actually enter our drives and, indeed, our houses.

Cllr Harries told the Guardian that the long-awaited traffic scheme was "imminent" but had been delayed by the fact more residents had come forward wishing the areas around their homes to be included.

"It was only last week that this was agreed," he added. "I'd asked for something to be done over a year ago.

"If the parking charges in Ammanford were lower, people would be using official car parks and not leaving their vehicles all over the place.

"Instead they're going up another 20p in January which is completely crazy – the last thing this town needs is an increase in parking charges.

"Parking in Ammanford may be cheap compared to other places, but this is only a small town and we just don't have as much as other towns."
