STEEL doors are being put up in Ammanford Park's public toilets in a bid to deter vandals, town councillors have been told.

County councillor Colin Evans reminded members that the toilets – which have been persistently targeted by louts – would be maintained by Carmarthenshire county council for the next three years prior to the town council taking them over.

But Cllr Chris Jones felt it would be cheaper for the town council to employ their own staff. "It would be better to have someone working four hours a day for us," he said.

"Two of our own people would do an awful lot more than the county council do now."

But town clerk Miriam Phillips feared such employees could end up losing their jobs if the toilets continue to be attacked by vandals.

Cllr Jonathan Jennings said an idea to put vandal-proof steel grills across the doors had earlier been mooted. "It would be interesting to know whether the county council are going to do that," he added.

Cllr Evans disclosed steel doors were being erected. "The county council will be responsible for the toilets' maintenance over the next three years which I feel is a pretty good deal," he said.
