THE leader of Carmarthenshire county council has warned that there is no end in sight to the current economic crisis and residents should prepare for the worst.

Councillor Kevin Madge told members of Cwmaman town council that next year would see cuts “of Biblical proportions”.

Cllr Madge said the local authority was facing hard choices and that many current services could face the axe.

“Decisions will have to be made regarding what we will save and what we will not save,” he said. “There is simply not the budget there to keep things like public toilets open.

“We have massive decisions to make because there are going to be cuts of Biblical proportions.”

He said recent meetings between council chiefs and Welsh Government ministers had left him in no doubt that the future appeared very bleak.

“The cuts that we are facing are a moving target.

“We simply do not know what is coming next year. We have bigger and bigger cuts on the way.

“Huge decisions will have to made and the only thing we know is choosing to do nothing is no choice at all.”
