CWMAMAN town councillors are to investigate the possibility of investing in a marquee.
If the move went ahead, the facility would become a mainstay of the annual carnival as well as proving a useful asset available to other local community groups.
“Not only could we use it at the carnival and other community events, but it may even provide an income for the council,” said Councillor David Williams, who dreamt up the idea.
Town clerk David Davies confirmed that the council currently spent “thousands” each year hiring a marquee for the duration of the carnival.
Cllr Mal Walker agreed the purchase of a marquee would prove “an asset to the council and to the community.
“With things the way they are financially, we need to be looking to get whatever we can from wherever we can and something like this would not only save us money in terms of our own expenses, but also generate money.
“It would be a really great asset and could be used for goodness knows how many things.”
Clerk Davies added: “The only question seems to be whether we can afford something which would be big enough to make it worthwhile.”
“The bigger the better as far as I am concerned,” said Cllr Williams. “Then we need to decide how we could fund it.”
Councillors agreed to investigate the purchase further as well as look into what grants may be available to support the scheme.
