AMMAN Valley movie buffs are in for a treat as the valley’s best-loved cinema bursts into digital technicolour.

Brynaman cinema has completed the installation of a new digital projector, ensuring movie lovers can enjoy the very latest blockbusters using the most modern technology.

The move means the cinema will no longer be queuing up alongside other venues for a chance to show new movies on 35mm film, but instead receive the latest productions downloaded direct from the distributors.

“There are about 150 cinemas still using 35mm films, but distributors were only making 30 or 40 copies of newmovies on 35mm, so cinemas like ourselves were having to wait our turn to get our hands on a copy,” said Brynaman cinema boss Brian Harries.

“That’s no longer the case.

Now we get them downloaded on to a hard drive so there is no waiting involved.”

The transformation of the cinema to digital, which cost in the region of £70,000, comes only two years after the installation of 3D screens, with Brian adamant that the venue remains at the cutting edge of cinema technology.

“We have been open since 1926 and we have always prided ourselves on keeping up to date with all the latest developments,” he said.

Brian, who has enjoyed a 55-year career in cinema – 48 at Brynaman – has seen the business transformed in recent years.

“There are now movies released in lots of different formats and with only a 35mm screen you could only get one.

Distributors who sent a 3D version would not let you have the 2D and vice versa.

“With this new projector we can show films in 2D and 3D as well as the new highspeed film rates. The projector means we have got it all and Brynaman is right up to date.”

Work has also begun on the installation of a second screen in the downstairs lounge at Brynaman, allowing the opportunity to show two movies at once for the first time in its 87- year history.
