A SUPERMARKET worker from Betws with a passion for music has been putting his talent to good use over the festive period – and raised almost a thousand pounds for charity in the process.

Owen Bailey has worked at the Ammanford branch of Tesco for eight years, but during the past few months has twice set up his keyboard and microphone in the store’s foyer to entertain shoppers.

In the process, Owen has raised much-needed cash for both Children in Need and Cancer Research, with his latest appearance taking place just before Christmas.

“Within just a short amount of time the money raised was phenomenal,” said Owen, 25.

“I was really moved by the compassion from the public and customers.

“It goes to show how much people care for such important causes.”

Owen has wowed shoppers during each of his appearances, belting out songs from the likes of Michael Buble, Billy Joel, Elton John, the Beatles and the Killers.

But his music has not been limited to the Ammanford store foyer.

In May, Owen found himself in the grand final of Tesco’s got Talent, performing in Romford, Essex, in front of a 3,000-strong audience.

Meanwhile, in July he recorded piano and vocal work at the Angel Studios in London for Tesco’s conference video, which was screened in the main international conference in London.

The former Amman Valley pupil put his passion for music down to inspirational teacher Hugh Thomas.

“He saw potential in me and encouraged my music,”

said Owen, “as did my exheadmaster, Owen Jones, who encouraged me to participate in the school’s musical culture.”
