A HEADTEACHER from the Towy Valley has told how she “went into shock”

on learning she had received an OBE for services to education in the New Year’s Honours List.

Llandeilo-born Sue Davies, 54, who teaches at Cynffig Comprehensive School in Kenfig Hill but who will take over at a new ‘superschool’ in Aberdare next month, said: “I simply could not believe it.

“My husband rang me to say we had an importantlooking letter and then he told me what was in it.

“I have absolutely no idea who put my name forward, but it’s absolutely fantastic news.”

Elsewhere, Olive Newton, of Pontardawe, received an OBE for services to equality and human rights issues and to the community in Neath Port Talbot.

Jackie Roberts, temporary Chief Constable of Dyfed-Powys Police, has been awarded the Queen’s Police Medal.

Describing the award as “a real honour” she added: “I have been privileged to have had a fantastic 29-year career in policing in Wales and Avon and Somerset and am looking forward to a few more years.

“It is lovely to get recognition for all the hard work, effort and sacrifice along the way, but I have to also thank all the staff who have worked so tirelessly alongside me.”

Glamorgan spin bowling legend Robert Croft, who lives in Fforest, Pontarddulais, is appointed an MBE.

The 42-year-old former Test star was the first Welsh cricketer to score 10,000 runs and take 1,000 wickets and ended his long career last summer.
