A LLANDEILO woman has been announced as the winner of the NFU Cymru / Principality Building Society Wales Woman Farmer of the Year competition at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair, Builth Wells.
Doris Jones, of Capel Isaac, inherited her family farm Maesteilo and has dedicated her life to the practical business of farming as well as bringing up children.
In addition, she has also taken the lead in organisations such as the Llanfynydd Young Farmers Club.
Her farm today has grown to cover some 450 acres with 800 sheep, 150 cattle, 10 horses and a variety of other animals such as a pig, goats, all sorts of poultry and bees.
“I am thrilled to have won this competition,” she said. “I made up my mind when I was only six years old that my destiny lay in farming.
“I have always believed that taking part is what is important and that winning is a bonus.”
Anne Astington, of Maespant, Crugybar, an Oxford graduatewhoopted for a life on the land and has run her own farm for the past 23 years, was named as a runnerup.
