ANYONE for tennis? That is the question being posed in Ammanford amid talk of resurrecting the town’s longextinct lawn tennis club.

The idea has arisen due to Ammanford Cricket Club’s controversial plan to substitute one of Ammanford Park’s four tennis courts with practice nets.

Local historian Terry Norman said that up until around 30 years ago the town boasted a thriving tennis club, although its former pavilion had long since been demolished.

“There have been petitions going around town blocking the cricket club’s idea and I have been told that Ammanford tennis club is going to be reformed,” said county councillor Deian Harries.

“If we had a prosperous tennis club in town the cricketers would never have considered taking away one of those courts.

“I’d love to see a tennis club in town – where have they been for decades?”

Cllr Harries added that residents directly behind the old putting green/boules area of the park would have no objection to the cricket club placing their nets there.

“This would be ideal for them as it will cut back on people congregating there which is a major problem in the summer months,” he said.

“There is a good case for both proposals and they need serious consideration.

“My only view is that within two miles there are currently 12 courts, which is quite a bit, and only one club which is in Llandybie.”
