AMMANFORD has gone elf crazy.

Saturday will see the largest-ever gathering of Santa’s little helpers as the town kicks off the Christmas season in spectacular fashion.

Organisers hope to bring together more than 607 of the little festive favourites to secure a world record forAmmanford for the largest gathering of Santa’s elves.

The woman behind the scheme says the record-breaking attempt “is in the best of elf”.

Gail Jones, community liaison officer for builders Alun Griffiths (Contractors), said: “Interest is greater than we ever expected and there is a real buzz around the place.

“The street will be full of elves of all ages and Father Christmas is set to make a spectacular appearance, so there will be lots of entertainment to keep everyone happy.”

The attempt will mark the completion of the million-pound regeneration of Quay Street by the building firm.

Meanwhile, Ammanford mayor Paula Treharne – herself donning an elf costume - is urging the town to get behind the record attempt.

“I may have to sew two elf costumes together, because I’m not exactly petite,” she said. “If I’m going to dress up crazily, I really hope the rest of the town does the same. I really, really hope the people of Ammanford get behind this.

We’re going to have a really good Christmas, so why not start early?

“I want people to join in and have a laugh – so come on Ammanford, let’s have a bit of fun!”

The world record attempt is due to begin at 3pm, but elves can register from noon. Counting is set to take place between 3.30pm and 5pm, with one lucky elf given the honour of switching on the Quay Street lights.
