Pontardawe is located 8 miles north of Swansea in the centre of the Swansea Valley in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains. 'Ponty' as it is affectionately known sits alongside the river Tawe that winds its way through the valley towards the open sea at Swansea.
The village got its name from the welsh language for bridge on the Tawe, Bont ar Tawe.
Cattle Drovers heading from Llandovery used this route to travel to the Market Town of Neath. In the late 1800's work commenced on building St Peters Church loated in the centre of the village which was designed and build by Williams Parsons Esq. Parsons at the time stated that no other building should be built higher in the Valley.
Pontardawe hosted many industries such as a large number of steel tin plate works in the area as well as a thriving mining and rural Community.
