TV BROADCASTER and naturalist Iolo Williams will be showcasing the wonders of Dinefwr Park this weekend in his new wildlife series for the BBC; Iolo’s Great Welsh Parks.

The four part series, which started last Sunday at Bute Park in Cardiff, aims to explore some of Wales’ historic estates and find out what special places they are for wildlife.

When filming at Dinefwr Park, the only designated parkland National Nature Reserve in Wales, Iolo said: “Dinefwr is a wonderful place to see some of the best examples of British wildlife in their natural habitat.

“The ancient woodland provides an ideal environment for many species of animal and plant and when they fall, they are left as deadwood for an array of rare and interesting invertebrates to use as habitat.”

The one-off episode set at Dinefwr Park, near Llandeilo, follows Iolo as he gets up close and personal to the Dinefwr badgers and discovers the rarely seen Lesser Spotted Woodpecker.

The showhas certainly caused some excitement amongst the staff and volunteers working at the National Trust property - many of whom feature in the nature documentary.

Media officer for National Trust Carmarthenshire, Sophie Thomas, said: “We are so proud to have our magnificent estate broadcast to thousands on Iolo’s Great Welsh Parks. We all know just how lucky we are to work in such a special place for wildlife; it’s fantastic that now so many others will be able to see the magic of this historic landscape.

“Iolo is a great friend to us at Dinefwr,”

Sophie added. “It’s been an absolute pleasure to have him around throughout the year.

He’s a very knowledgeable man and was very accommodating to our curious visitors.”

Iolo’s Great Welsh Parks is due to air on BBC 1 at 5.30pm on Sunday, January 13.
