Kym Marsh has said filming physical scenes for next week’s run of dramatic episodes on Coronation Street left her “bruised”.

The actress is involved in episodes which will air after the watershed, as her character Michelle Connor gets caught up in villain Pat Phelan’s murderous attempt to exact his revenge.

The killer, who returns to Weatherfield after being presumed dead, shows up at her wedding, taking the guests hostage and shooting her in on-screen moments Marsh has described as having “so much blood”.

Marsh told the Daily Mirror of her scenes, filmed with Phelan actor Connor McIntyre: “It was very physical and I was bruised the next day.

“It was two solid days and it is always tiring filming quite emotional stuff.

“Because that’s the thing that people don’t seem to realise is that our job can be quite physical. But it was great fun! It’s not something I’ve ever done before. There was a lot of firsts for me.”

She added that “it’s not the easiest thing being dragged off with a train at the back of you and trying not to step on it” when asked about filming while wearing a wedding dress.

Marsh, whose character is tying the knot with Robert Preston (Tristan Gemmill), said viewers will be surprised when Phelan hijacks the wedding, because they were not previously involved in the villain’s storyline.

“We haven’t had many dealings with him (but) I think it’s quite good because it throws a wild card in and gets people shocked,” she said.

The former Hear’Say star said she relished the chance to be part of such a dramatic storyline.

“As actors, that’s kind of what you want,” she said.

“But when we read the scripts we were all a bit like, ‘Oh my goodness, there’s so much blood and so many bad things happening’.”

Five special episodes of Corrie will air from 9pm on ITV over the next week from Monday, following the live semi-final shows of Britain’s Got Talent.
