Southgate Morgan Gwynfor It is with sadness that we record the sudden death after many years of ill health of Gwynfor Southgate, Gwal Rhedyn, Cynghordy, Llandovery who passed away at Llandovery Cottage Hospital on Wednesday 6th May 2015, aged 91 years. He was a loving husband, a caring father, father-in-law, grandfather and great grandfather. Gwynfor was born at Siloh, Cilycwm and was the youngest son of David and Elizabeth Southgate and brother to Jim, Christy and Dai. When Gwynfor was three months old, the family moved to Trefollied, Cynghordy which was his home until he married Eirwen in 1953. He served in the Second World War and on his return home, joined his uncle William Southgate in the hairdressing business.Upon his uncles death, Gwynfor continued with the business and secured contracts to cut the hair of pupils at Llandovery College and the patients at Llandovery Hospital. Later he joined Llanelli Technical College as a full time lecturer in the hairdressing department until his retirement due to ill health. Gwynfor was a faithful member of St Mary’s Church, Cynghordy where he served as a people’s and vicars warden and represented the church as a governor at Capel Cynfab School. The funeral service was held at St Mary’s Church, Cynghordy on 13th May 2015.The Reverend Anne McKnight officiated and the organist was Mrs Haulwen Evans. The eulogy was said by The Very Reverend John Rogers and Mr Arwyn Evans, with service leaflets distributed by Mrs Lilian Davies, Alice Pepper and Mr Huw Nicholas. The bearers were Messrs David Southgate (nephew), Peter Aubrey (nephew), David Southgate, Cyrus and Noel Evans, Eirian Evans and Brian Page. Family mourners were: Mrs Eirwen Southgate (wife), Susan and Gerwyn Jones (daughter and son-in-law), Robert and Elaine Jones (grandson and and daughter-in-law), Huw and Dr Joanna Jones (grandson and daughter-in-law) and Elena Jones and Stuart Jones (granddaughter and boyfriend), Gwyneth Southgate and Eiryl (sister-in-law and niece), Gwyneth, Susan and Robert Southgate (cousins) Gill Aubrey, Haydn Morgan and Wyn Williams. Unable to attend were Glyndwr and Gertrude Davies (brother-in law and wife), Dyfed and Beryl (brother-in law-and wife). Gillian and Robert Brown (niece and husband). Donations totalling £875 were gratefully received for St Mary’s Church, Cynghordy, Cottage Hospital League of Friends and Cancer Research Wales. Eirwen and family would like to thank the Doctors and staff at Llandovery Health Centre and the Cottage Hospital for the support and care they showed Gwynfor, for messages of sympathy, flowers and donations received and those who attended the funeral. Personal thanks to Mrs Nesta Evans for her continuing support. Special thanks to Wynne Price Funeral Director for the caring and professional manner he conducted the funeral and also to The British Legion for their representation on the day.
